What are the SDGs?

SDGs stands for Sustainable Development Goals.
They are goals that should be addressed by the international community as a whole, unanimously adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015 to realize a sustainable, diverse, and inclusive society (taking into consideration all members of society), based on the basic principle of “leaving no one behind”.

With 2030 as the target year, the SDGs consist of 17 goals (targets) common to the international community, such as “End Poverty” and “Zero Hunger,” and 169 targets (individual targets) set for each goal. The SDGs expect all stakeholders, including governments and companies, to proactively contribute to the achievement of the goals.

Joint development of building diagnostic tools

Smart Tile Saver®, jointly developed with Takenaka Corporation, is a thermal image processing and analysis software for the results of exterior wall surveys using infrared device methods for buildings with tiled exterior walls.
The software is a series of systems that automatically divides the thermal image data of exterior wall tiles into the correct number of tiles using an automatic tile allocation function, and then automatically identifies floating tiles using a floating tile identification function that uses a proprietary AI algorithm. Accurate deterioration analysis provides numerical and visual results.

Implementation of proper diagnosis using AI-based building diagnostic tools

We are contributing to the creation of safe and secure cities and a sustainable society through “building diagnosis” that can correctly visualize the safety of buildings by making full use of our original AI algorithm used in the “AI automatic analysis of tile lift” to identify tile lift, AI algorithm to “extract and select” cracks in concrete buildings and “classify and analyze cracks”, and AI algorithm that can analyze welding defects in stainless steel roofs. We will continue to contribute to the creation of safe and secure communities and the realization of a sustainable society through “building diagnosis” that can correctly visualize the safety of buildings.

Joined Long Life Building Promotion Association

Since its foundation, SUGITEC has been promoting business activities to provide one-stop solutions for “technological development,” “investigation and diagnosis,” and “repair and renovation work” to ensure the safety and longevity of buildings, as well as appropriate maintenance and preservation of construction facilities.
SUGITEC has been recognized by the Long Life Building Association of Japan (BELCA), which aims to contribute to the formation of a society with a good stock of buildings in Japan, for its past achievements, and became a full member of BELCA, the Long Life Building Association of Japan, on January 1, 2020. SUGITEC will continue to contribute to a society of high-quality building stock, which is the goal of BELCA, while striving for the appropriate maintenance and preservation of building structures.

In-house study sessions for qualification acquisition

The company pays for the cost of taking various national certification examinations and provides certification allowances to employees who acquire national certifications, creating a rewarding workplace and an environment for skill improvement. In addition, through the implementation of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) accredited seminars, we are aiming to establish an academy for maintenance and preservation technology to foster the development of future leaders. Our efforts will contribute to the maintenance and preservation of the cityscape of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, and to the creation of a safe and secure city that is resilient to disasters.

Active employment of female employees

SUGITEC is committed to diversity and inclusion by actively promoting the advancement of women in the workplace. In fact, SUGITEC’s building survey and analysis department is composed of versatile female employees who are engaged in tasks ranging from infrared camera surveys to drone surveys, as well as the analysis of survey results and the preparation of reports.

Conducting training with outside lecturers

We have invited an experienced instructor in exterior wall repair from a material manufacturer to come and promote efforts to improve the skills of workers, education and training, and training activities for the purpose of fostering leaders of the industry. We also hold regular meetings of the Sugitec Safety and Health Cooperative Association to raise awareness and educate workers on safety and health, and to conduct surveys and measures to prevent industrial accidents. We will continue to promote productivity improvement through the use of web conferencing for remote communication within the company, use of conversion from paper to tablets, development of an exterior wall survey system using HoloLens (AR technology), use of drone technology, etc.

Sponsorship of the Kyoto Children’s Home Delivered Meals Project

SUGITEC, as a sponsor of the Kyoto Hannahlies, will donate home game tickets to the Kyoto Hannahlies as a gift of not only food but also a memorable experience through the “Kyoto Children’s Home Meal Project,” which provides regular food assistance to families in need in Kyoto City. As a sponsor of SUGITEC, the Kyoto Hannahs will receive home game tickets as a gift of not only food, but also a memorable experience.

Sponsorship support for local sports teams

SUGITEC has always been conscious of growing in harmony with local businesses and society, and as part of its sports promotion activities, SUGITEC is an official sponsor of Kyoto Sanga F.C., and a partner of Okoyasu Kyoto AC, which aims to become the second J-League team from Kyoto. F.C.” as an official sponsor, and as a partner of “Okoshiyasu Kyoto AC,” which aims to become the second J-League team from Kyoto, as well as supporting Kyoto FC Nagaokakyo Junior Youth. We also support Kyoto’s professional basketball team, the Kyoto Hannahlies, as a Blue Partner.

This section summarizes activities proposed and initiated by Sugitec staff.

My Bottle Activity (Reduction of Plastic Waste)

Plastic waste in Japan continues to increase, totaling 9 million tons per year. This is the second largest in the world after the United States. It is said that 20 billion plastic bottles are used annually in Japan alone. Plastic is a material that is difficult to return to nature. The problem of plastic in the oceans is becoming an increasingly serious social issue, and it is even predicted that if the current trend continues, by 2050 the amount of trash will outnumber the amount of fish in the ocean. We at SUGITEC are making a small contribution to this problem through our sustainable My Bottle initiative, which can be used repeatedly and reduces waste.

Activities (ongoing)

Water servers are installed in the company. One water server bottle is equivalent to 24 PET bottles. Since we use more than 5 bottles every month, we promote the use of “My Bottle” in order to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions. (Kyoto Head Office: General Affairs Department staff)

Printing and Paper Reduction Activities

We will contribute to the prevention of global warming and air and water pollution by reducing deforestation through the promotion of paperless operations and by implementing the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. And we will participate in Eco Action 21. We will further promote the computerization of internal documents, use of web conferencing, use of electronic contracts, web forms, electronic seals, electronic payroll forms, and green procurement as contributions that can be made through daily operations in each department, including the Internal Affairs, Engineering, and Research Departments.

Results for 2022

The number of printed pages used this year was reduced by approximately 5.2%, or 2,600 sheets, compared to 2021. As for printing, monochrome printing increased by 1,122 sheets. This is due to our thoroughgoing efforts to print in monochrome, which is less costly.

In addition, color printing has been reduced by 3,641 pages, which we believe is due in large part to the awareness of and response to the paperless system in each department. (Kyoto Head Office: Research Department and Engineering Department staff)

Ecocap Movement

We have set up a cap collection box in the company in order to engage in the “Ecocap Movement,” which aims to promote recycling, reduce CO2 emissions, and provide medical aid to developing countries with the proceeds from the sale of the caps. We have started this activity with the hope that the plastic bottle caps we used to throw away will lead to environmental conservation and support for developing countries, even if only a little. We will continue our efforts in the future!

Activities (ongoing)

While promoting the use of “My Bottle,” we also recycle empty plastic bottles for beverages that are needed internally and by individuals, and participate in the Ecocap Movement of the NPO Ecocap Promotion Association to send the caps when a certain number is collected.
